not that i particularly disagree with this sentiment, but by this barometer, we also live in a murder culture, a theft culture, a genocide culture, a holocaust culture, a gangster culture, etc. elevating one type of violence over the others seems somewhat sexist and bullshit-y to me.
I don’t know that it’s particularly better to be hypersensitive/hyperaware of this and to correct it — this seems obsessively pedantic and joyless — or to ignore it and give either no or slightly negative reinforcement in order to minimize this.
“Rape culture is a culture in which people who have survived a violent crime are asked to laugh about it because other people think it’s funny.”— (i wish i could put this on a business card and hand it out to people who make rape jokes. the flip side would say FUCK YOU.)
